Edward Selig Salomon

tein, Germany, he emigrated to Illinois in 1856 and was elected an Alderman of Chicago's 6th Ward in 1861. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 24th Illinois Infantry and was commissioned an officer. In August 1862, he joined the 82nd Illinois Regiment and was appointed lieutenant Colonel. He became a hero during the Battle of Gettysburg, became in permanent command of the 82nd Illinois in 1864 and led the regiment during the Atlanta Campaign. For his distinguished service he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he was elected clerk of Cook County, Illinois and was appointed Governor of the Washington Territory in 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant serving until 1872.
